Products are often thrown away before the end of their use cycle, wasting precious resources like metal and plastic. This is especially true of small appliances, many of which should be repairable. Only 12% of broken appliances are attempted to be fixed. Most fail and end up in the garbage. Often, knowledge or convenience of repair is the major barrier.
What if a small appliance could demystify the repair process and lower the barrier to repair behavior?
My approach to changing users' repair behavior was to create a kit for a small everyday appliance that tacked as many barriers and motivators as possible, including access to the required knowledge, perceived effort, accountability to materials and methods, environmental concerns, functional value, and emotional attachment.
